* north - east coastline of madagascar - mountain bike it and paddle - the most beautiful, authentic, safest and relatively un-explored place in Africa...we did it in dec '97 and its still the best holiday I've had...

*paddle the Bass Strait (between Tassie and mainland Aussie) - takes about a week in double ocean kayaks- have friends who have done it twice - they will guide you/organise for a small fee... Its like an island-hop to get across.

*"quick" one - the Kokoda challenge run/trek in queensland, Oz - 17th July 2010 - to replicate the real kokoda trail - done in teams of 4 - 96km on foot - google the website
Entries open 1st Feb

*Tuichi river white water rafting - 7-10 days after a 2 day over-land 4x4 and 2 days trek with donkeys. Bolivia. Raw un-explored, genuine south american amazon with no tourists.. Hasn't been "run" by many peolpe. We did it with Discovery Channel but Im not sure if there are any formal tour operators doing it. Would need some river guides with grade 5 river guiding experience
(or do the Franklin river in Tassie)

All these trips involve a lot more being active than just sitting in a truck ect...

I could go on ... : )

just to jump on bandwagon here - mates of mine are nearing the completion of their epic journey, Will almost be 2 year by the time they get back to London. Steve and Roxy (http://www.overafrica.org) did it in style, converting an old bedford truck into a camper truck, named shongololo. They met up with Tim and the boys (africansurfer) in London to get the low down on the west cost.
I personally feel its the one thing that we as South Africans should all do, and thats visit more of africa, including South Africa itself.

I'm doing the Cape to Cairo route by using public transport in October this year. The plan is to use a minimum of 3 different types of public transport in each country, i.e. bus, taxi, train, boat, etc., excerpt planes. I have planned to do it over 5 - 6 weeks and go through 10 countries..

interestingly enough i've been thinking about a road trip through the states. not wild but it might interesting to meet the normal everyday people. the ones you don't see on tv. missing work, however, makes it financially impractical .

Check out my friends, the Munros blog. They imported and customised a truck for them and their two little ones to travel around Africa. They've just gotten back. http://www.munromobile.blogspot.com/
